Protect Your Concierge Business From Information Overload

Way back in 1970 author Alvin Toffler wrote about “information overload” in his book Future Shock. Toffler explained how having too much information can make it more difficult for a person to understand an issue or make a decision. Fast-forward forty+ years, and information overload is a way of life.   Too many e-mails, too many websites to visit, too many sources of opinions can actually paralyze you as you try to take action.

Here are some solutions to keep from drowning in too much information:

1) Spend less time searching for information that’s “nice to know” and more time on things you “need to know.”

2) Focus on quality of information vs. quantity. Reading and writing a short, concise email is more valuable to you than wading through long emails looking for the key points.

3) Be an agent of creating better information. Be direct in what you ask people, so they can provide short precise answers.

4) Forget about multi-tasking. Single-tasking keeps your mind focused on one issue at a time.

5) Disconnect during specific times of the day so you can concentrate fully for a period of time on one thing. Yes, turn off the email, telephones, web alerts, Facebook, etc.

6) Ask yourself, ‘Is this relevant to me, my job, friends, or family? Is this something I need to know or is it just taking up mental space?’

Apply some of these suggestions and  you’ll start to feel more relaxed and in control of your world.
